what is OCCUPATIONAL THERAPY?
Occupational Therapy (OT) helps children with completing tasks or activities that they might find challenging. These tasks are termed as "occupations" by OTs, which means that they are considered to be meaningful tasks that each individual completes in their day.
Examples of what these "occupations" could be for a child are:
Play - this is considered to be the most important occupation for a child, as it is through play that a child learns more about themselves and the world around them. There is much literature that supports this, and for occupational therapists who work primarily with children and their caregivers, this occupation is commonly used as a bridge to learning other skills.
School Participation - as a child grows into school age (from 5 years onward), their primary "occupation" transitions from playing to primarily becoming a student (with play and leisure still being a vital area in their lives). At school or through education, a child develops higher skill-sets which ideally molds them into an active and functional member of society.
Dressing, bathing, toileting, eating/feeding - these are examples of basic activities of daily living. These activities happen every day and are necessary for self-care.
How can occupational therapy help?
Occupational therapists are considered experts at identifying underlying causes that impact an individual's ability to complete their occupations. We can evaluate a child's development (motor, neurological, emotional, cognitive) and determine if any illness, trauma, or disorder is affecting their growth and development.
The Digital OT will use secure video-conferencing to interview parents and observe children determine possible causes of challenges in their day-to-day functioning. Through consultation, The Digital OT can provide better insight to families regarding these challenges, develop strategies to address them, and even provide therapeutic activities through interactive apps.
You can book a free 15-minute phone call for more information on our services.
